Description

On the Geislinger Steige – 175 Years of Railway History

The powerful Class 194 electric locomotives were iconic heavy freight engines of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Built from 1940 onwards, they remained in service until 1988 and were widely used on steep gradients such as the famous Geislinger Steige, which celebrates 175 years of railway operation in 2025.

Besides their role as banking engines, Class 194 locomotives also hauled local passenger services, often with the well‑known n‑coaches (“Silberlinge”) featuring their characteristic stainless‑steel finish. Today these trains are history – but on a model railway layout, a 194 with a set of Silberlinge brings this era back to life.
